U-M’s fifth annual Giving Blueday aims for more than 10,000 gifts

November 27 is the University of Michigan’s fifth annual Giving Blueday: a 24-hour fundraising campaign for hundreds of different programs and causes at U-M. This year, the university hopes to garner more than 10,000 gifts in support of Michigan.

Donors can visit the Giving Blueday website to find causes and make donations, view real-time progress, read about the impact of Giving Blueday and more.

The campaign coincides with Giving Tuesday, a worldwide initiative emphasizing the importance of giving to nonprofit organizations. U-M joined the movement in 2014, raising over $3.2 million.

Each year, donors make gifts of all sizes in support of students, organizations and programs across all three U-M campuses — Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint. Last year on Giving Blueday, donors gave more than $4.4 million.

Challenges and matching funds encourage participation. From now until November 26, one person who shares the Giving Blueday video using #GivingBlueday will be randomly selected to receive $1,000 for the fund of their choice.

Donors can give to the highest priorities of any of U-M’s 19 schools and colleges, Dearborn or Flint campuses. For example, donors to U-M’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) can give to over 100 funds supporting their favorite department or program, or one of LSA’s priorities such as need-based scholarships, internships through the Opportunity Hub and more.

The event has evolved into an important vehicle for developing fundraising skills and instilling a culture of philanthropy in students. Student participation on Giving Blueday has continued to increase, growing from 80 organizations the first year to nearly 150 student organizations — from Dance Marathon to Doctors of Tomorrow — raising funds for their causes in 2018.

Last year, donors to MUSIC Matters gave more money than ever before in support of SpringFest — a daylong festival uniting the U-M and Ann Arbor communities and the largest student-run event on campus. Proceeds from Springfest help MUSIC Matters maximize positive impact in the community by supporting social ventures as well as other organizations that are catalyzing social change.

By making gifts on Giving Blueday, donors can support the Victors for Michigan campaign before it ends in December 2018.
