"What advice do you have for Fordson high school students who wish to be selected for the Brehm Scholarship?"

“Your four years of high school will fly by. So do not wait till next year to take advantage of all the opportunities Fordson has to offer. We are fortunate enough to attend a high school with so many resources from sports and clubs to AP classes and amazing mentors. I do advise that whatever you decide to pursue in high school to be passionate about it because only then will you be willing to give so much of yourself and your time for it.”

"Why Michigan?"

“From the stately and dignified facades of its beautiful buildings to the vibrancy of student life. From the artists to the budding intellectuals, the University of Michigan has a place for every kind of student. Ann Arbor wholeheartedly accommodates and respects the value of diversity - a mindset that I appreciate and continue to acknowledge. Since the beginning of my freshman year, I have wanted to attend U-M due to its prestigious Medical School and exceptional research opportunities available. In acquiring hands-on experiences and immersing myself into the immensely rich academic campus, I will be able to pursue my passion of medicine, while giving back to the Dearborn community as Mr. and Mrs. Brehm have!”

"Why Michigan?"

“When I first visited the UM campus a few years ago, I knew that it was the right place for me. I knew that at Michigan, I would be able to broaden my understanding of topics that I am passionate about and work with faculty members to further my knowledge in specific areas of study. I learned that along with its prestigious history for academics, the University of Michigan offers students a unique social life with such a diverse culture and atmosphere, allowing me to meet new people from different backgrounds and have a comfortable transition from high school to college. Ultimately, I couldn't picture myself attending any other university but UM.”

"How has being admitted to UM and receiving the Brehm Scholarship helped you in your desire to achieve your goals? Why Michigan?"

“Receiving the Brehm scholarship is truly an honor. I'm grateful to know that I can spend my college career focusing on my studies, research, and community involvement and less on alleviating financial burdens. Michigan is the school for passionate young minds and hard workers. It is a place to get an education beyond the books. I choose Michigan because it is the optimal college for me to challenge myself and to grow academically.”

"What advice do you have for Fordson high school students who wish to be selected for the Brehm Scholarship?"

“To all the Fordson students, set goals, stay focused, and never give up; persistence is key. It may be easier said than done, but just remember, hard work and dedication outweighs the perceived definition of “smart.” Be passionate and love what you’re doing, while simultaneously maintaining grades and giving back to your community. When you get here, take advantage of all the opportunities that will be presented to you. More importantly, never forget where you started, where you’ve gotten, and who has helped you along your journey. Thank your teachers, parents, mentors, peers, donors--because without them, you probably wouldn’t have received all the help, care, and opportunities. Personally, I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Brehm, for financially supporting my educational journey and welcoming me into their loving and supporting family. I hope to one day be able to pay it forward and make a difference in my community, just as they have continuously done for the Fordson community.”

"Why Michigan?"

“The University of Michigan has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. The beautiful campus, welcoming environment, and vigorous academics made the University of Michigan my first, and only, choice. My father, who studied aerospace engineering at U of M, has instilled in me a strong drive for academic success since a child. The University of Michigan gives me the perfect opportunity to pursue a pre-Med academic route in one of the most prestigious schools in the world.”

"What advice do you have for Fordson high school students who wish to be selected for the Brehm Scholarship?"

“Receiving the Brehm was a dream come true, the feeling is indescribable when the financial burden is removed and a prestigious honor is put in its place. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity to be known as a Brehm Scholar. For anyone who wants the Brehm, my best advice is be yourself. The application review is holistic and your grades, rank, and SAT are only a small part of their selection. Truly showcase who YOU are as a person in the essays-- your discoveries, struggles, triumphs, etc. Lastly, just have fun during your years at Fordson and don't miss out on things that you want to do.”

With the opportunity to learn from the very best instructors in their respected fields, a community of students committed to excellence, and a campus welcoming of all beliefs and backgrounds, I am confident the University of Michigan will offer me an inclusive and exceptional academic experience. But more importantly, the skills and critical thinking I will acquire will take me across the country and around the globe.”

"What advice do you have for Fordson high school students who wish to be selected for the Brehm Scholarship?"

“Four years, forty-eight months, 1,460 days, 35,040 hours, 2,102,400 minutes, 126,144,000 seconds - the time you will spend, on average, working towards your high school diploma. Within this time frame, if you wish to be selected for the Brehm Scholarship, you probably, or rather should plan on pursuing rigorous AP and dual enrollment courses, committing to extracurriculars, getting involved in your community, and studying for the SAT/ACT. While your class rank and SAT score(s) are relevant in the decision-making process, they are undoubtedly far from the deciding factor. Instead it is, which I believe my experience as a student that wasn't ranked in the top ten grants me the credibility to say, your character, as depicted through your application to the University of Michigan.”

"How has being admitted to UM and receiving the Brehm Scholarship helped you in your desire to achieve your goals?"

“The impact the Brehm Scholarship has had on me is incredible. I come from a low socioeconomic background and paying for college was not feasible to my family. However, the Brehm Scholarship has enabled me to pursue an undergraduate degree with no worries about finances. An immense burden was lifted off me and my family as we do not have to worry about student loans or debt or anything of the sort. Mr. Brehm is enabling me to pursue free education, which not many can say, and also enabling me to enjoy what college has to offer instead of stressing over how I will pay for classes or rooms. At the University of Michigan, I plan to stay ambitious and set goals to hold myself to a higher standard than ever before.”
