China Alumni Group Establishes U-M Scholarship Fund

A new scholarship fund, the U-M China Alumni Scholarship, has been established by a group of alumni in China. It is the first alumni-supported endowed scholarship to benefit students from China studying at U-M.

A group of alumni in Chinaled by Lefan Gong (LLM '99)established the scholarship in 2015 in anticipation of U-M President Mark Schlissel’s visit in July. While in China, President Schlissel had the opportunity to meet with several of the contributing alumni and thank them in person for their generous support.

Funds raised will support undergraduate and graduate students who attended high school or college in China and will be distributed based on merit, with a preference for students with financial need. Alumni in China will work with U-M to raise more funds for the scholarship and connect with students in the program.

U-M currently has more than 2,400 students from China, the largest group from any foreign country. The first Chinese students graduated from U-M in 1896, when Mary Stone and Ida Khan received their medical degrees from the U-M Medical School. By the 1940s, U-M had more students from China than any other university in the United States.
